gulf intercoastal waterway eco-tour - Posted: 01/15/09
We've had our winter cold blast this week, hopefully this is about all the winter we will get. The cold has driven the fishermen and the fish into the canals and intercoastal waters for protection.

The Gulf intercoastal waterway runs from Carrabelle Fl to Brownsville Tx and averages 12-13 ft deep. Our eco-tours focus on this waterway on the colder days for a reason, easy access and bountiful wildlife. We made a nice leisurely ride from Port St Joe marina up the St Joe canal to the gulf intercoastal waterway searching for an eagle nest I had heard about recently. Along the way we saw a couple of great blue herons and a molting male bald eagle, the herons are pretty amazing due to ability to land on such small branches and just sit there, they are big birds and when you approach them near the water, they fly into nearby trees and perch on a really small limb. The molting eagle was the first we'd seen this year, we watched him for a while and I shot video for the outdoor show, forgetting to take a still photo. We found the nest and watched it for about 45 minutes, nobody home today, must have been a day for giving the baby flying lessons...oh well here's a picture taken from a distance, we looked at it close with the spotting scope and its huge!! how they stick something that large on top of a tree and make it stay, i don't know...

I tried a spot in the bay along the way home that I knew to hold big redfish, sure enough the colder water had them hanging around the structure and I landed this nice over the slot size red,,,about 18 lbs and nearly 3 ft long..he swam away healthy...

I guess winter ain't so bad...
