weedlines and mahi mahi - Posted: 05/25/12

The sargassum grass has shown up early and with it come Mahi Mahi. Within 12-14 miles of Mexico Beach there are large grass flats holding 2-4 lb fish that are fun to catch, beautiful to look at, and delicious to eat. We use 1/4 oz jam fab jigs that imitate the flutter of falling injured bait fish or 2/0 thin circle hooks with a live LY on very light tackle. Work slowly around the edges of the weed bed pitching your bait near the edges and letting it sink slowly keeping the bail open and slowly feeding line out. Sometimes it is necessary to chum with some cut pieces of the live bait you are using, not too much, you're not feeding them, just an appetizer.

The limits on Mahi in the Gulf is 10 fish per person and the season is whenever the water warms to 78-80.
