Well federal waters finally opened for the very rare red snapper, very rare if you can believe the feds fish research. We hit the 18 mile bridge span with the water temp at 83.5, water clear and a s/e wind 5-10 kts, seas were 1-2 and it was near perfect conditions. We had a full livewell of pinfish that are plentiful in the canal. With the large snapper, the best technique is to anchor upcurrent from the structure and chum with pilchards, also caught in the canal, keeping the snapper away from the structure by chumming them up to you. We used large Penn 7500 spinning tackle and just enough weight to get the bait down through the chum, keep the bail open and let the pinfish swim down through the water column, the snapper will find him soon enough. Then hang on, a snapper fights all the way up, shaking that head the entire time. When you get them chummed up you can literally pick out the fish you want to target and drop to him. If you have no live bait, a frozen cigar minnow or spanish sardine will work, but you need to use florocarbon leader, snapper are more line wary than other bottom dwellers, and dead bait makes them more wary. We quickly limited out since the numbers have been reduced to 2 snapper per person, but they were all good sized snapper since we used the chumming technique.
Tight lines and calm winds
