We ran the 45 miles to the fishing grounds in just over an hour on the TomCat, seas were 2-3 and the big cat skimmed the tops at just over 40kts. What a way to ride, so smooth I finished my nap in the bean bag while Capt Tom minded the auto-pilot. We get at least 2 hours more fishing that the bigger, slower charter boats and still beat them back to the canal.
We deep dropped diamond jigs over the Zennia wreck in 200 ft, this is a great amberjack spot, we have several over 50 lbs and one over 100 lbs off this spot, but today was not to be, 1 aj that was a little short. Time to move to grouper grounds, next drop was a small piece of hard bottom in 210 ft that holds some huge gag grouper, first drop produced a 19 lb red grouper, that was followed by 4 scamp grouper, but no huge gags today. Next spot is our favorite drifting area, we can drift almost 1 mile over hard coral bottom catching red grouper and red snapper in 150 ft. This is also a great place to load up lots of the smaller white snapper, we downsize the tackle and use a multi-hook rig tipped with squid, these are great eating fish, and the smaller ones can be put back out on a flat line to entice the roving wahoo or smoker kingfish.
Overall another great day offshore and plenty of fish for the freezer.
