My buddy Chris, his brother in law Richey and friend Jeff from cold cold Columbus OH gave it a try Saturday. Its a good thing they weren't trying to catch dinner, 7 hours of fishing and 3 over the slot redfish was what we had to show for the day. The forecast was 2 ft seas, southeast winds 5-10 and mid 60's, reality was 2-3 ft seas all close together, winds 10-15 from the southeast and high 50's, but it wasn't Ohio!!
They knew coming in that except for amberjack, bottom fishing was out of season, but catching was more important than keeping. We left the canal with plenty of frozen squid and some spanish sardines with rigs set up for snapper and grouper, with my shimano jigging rod set up for vertical jigging for aj's. We hit some nice marks over structure in the car body's area about 55', the bottom machine was lit up and marked fish from the bottom to about 30', one big old ugly rockfish, and to make it worse, my pliers had bounced out of the holders and was gone...aahhh but we're fishing! Long report shortened,,bunch of sites hit, lots of good marks over structure out to 13 miles, 2 short groupers.
So on to my last best spot to try to get redfish to eat on the way in, I knew these fish had been holding around this structure since the water temp was in the low 60's, so we changed everybody to spinning tackle, rigged with light weights carolina style, just enough to get it down in the water column but not deep enough to catch the structure. Down sized the hooks and put on squid, bite on!! Jeff caught all 3 so he took home bragging rights, but Richey won first fish and ugliest fish, Chris got honorable mention with the biggest bird nest I've ever seen on conventional tackle...
All total, 3 redfish from 13 lbs to 18 lbs, took the picture, I think Jeff kissed this one, and then released them carefully to bite another day!!!
