Well the water has finally warmed to 68-69 and the spanish mackerel showed up over the weekend in big numbers. Saturday I caught 9 spanish on a cobia scouting trip, although flipper helped himself to 5 more, and Sunday Capt Tom and grandsons caught 60 near the beaches just out of the mexico beach canal in a couple of hours. These fish are feeding aggressively on glass minnows, so look for the birds diving and troll that way. We are using a home-made rig tied with light coffee colored wire, a pompano jig tied first, then a clark spoon (00 and 1's) tied a few inches behind the jig...also the old stand-by, a spanish tree with a light trolling weight and a clark spoon trailer.
The action has been fast although Tuesday I took a family from Louisville Ken. and fought the strong southeast wind trolling and nada...zippo, we didn't see any birds and appeared everyone took the day off from biting, the high pressure system shut things down for a day or so, and the winds are pretty gusty....good day for re-tying rigs! Good news is that this strong wind from the south/southeast will warm the water a few more degrees and that should bring the cobia riding those currents...the weather should settle by the late weekend and next week should be good.
April 1st will bring the grouper season back in and they'll be hungry!!
