The bait are nearshore and the kings are always close to them. Water temp is up to 81 and the bait pods are on the bouy line and over structure. Use a live bait rig or heavy sabiki to catch the hard-tails, then rig them on a small live bait hook and a treble stinger. I tie a balloon up the line so the runner is pulling hard and catching attention of the smoker kings, i set the live bait feature so the line is paying out but not open spooled. If the bite is slow, add some smell to the water with frozen glass minnows or menhaden oil. I don't like tying a chum bag behind the boat because a large kingfish will get tangled in it for sure.
If you want more action and smaller better tasting fish, try trolling about 4 knots with a duster rigged with frozen cigar minnows, you'll catch more fish in the 12-15 lb range.
The key to good eating kingfish is how you clean them, cut the fish into steaks by cutting off the head and tail, then cutting equal size steaks leaving the skin on. When you look at the steaks you'll see small "rib eyes" along the spine, take a sharp paring knife and cut those little circles of meat away from the spine and throw away the rest. Fry em up and those fish nuggets are tasty and white flaky meat, you can fool people who think they don't like mackerel.....
