I had heard about the tarpon bite at Indian Pass all summer, and I finally made the time to go check it out....wow, have I been missing the bite!! Capt Trey Landry, my buddy Jon Ramsden and I went out to shoot some video for the Bluewater Outrigger TV show, we hoped to jump a tarpon, maybe catch a tripletail, and a big shark. We spent a few minutes with the cast net and loaded the well with menhaden, these are thick around the pass and a perfect bait for big tarpon. Tackle set up was med/heavy Shimano 7 ft rod and a Shimano reel spooled with 30 lb test, we added a leader with 100 lb flora-carbon and a 7/0 circle hook. Best approach is to find the birds working over the bait and drift with lines out and rods in the holders. Most old salts will tell you the rod holders catch more fish than the anglers cause they resist the urge to set the hook, leave the rod in the holder til the first jump from the tarpon, it won't take long.
We ran around a little looking for concentrations of fish activity and enjoying the pure natural beauty of Indian Pass and St Vincents Refuge. It took a few catch and release sailcats before FISH ON....Jon worked the fish (his first poon), I shot the video and Trey coached....I don't have still pictures for this report but you can see 10 minutes of video on youtube, search 80 pound Indian Pass tarpon. The water was a little dirty for sight fishing triple tail, so the score for 3 hours fishing....1 tarpon app 80 lbs, 20 large sailcats, 2 mid-size sharks and a whole lot of excitement....It is amazing to watch these fish roll around and jump all around the boat, we watched a show of large fish working these bait pods and landed one of our on....This is a lot like fun!!!
These fish are around Indian Pass from June til October, book your trip soon cause I'll be running to the Pass next season and adding tarpon to ways to spend your "Floridaze"....
