| The hunt for Reds in October - Posted: 10/18/09 |
Water temps are beginning to fall into the high 70's and the schools of redfish are beginning to orient to nearshore structure. The baitfish are schooled and the reds are always close by, you may have to move around to a few different areas, but as always, look for the birds and you'll find the fish. Artificial baits are working well since they allow you to cover a lot a water, I'm using a gold spoon 3/8 oz and tipped with either a "gulp" peeler crab or frozen squid chunk, also the old standby, a carolina rigged chunk of cut bait on a 5/0 circle hook. I'm using 20lb power pro braid because it casts well and allows a solid hookset, tie a 18in flora-carbon leader using a "no name" knot to a spider hitch, that way there is no swivel and you can reel the leader through the rod tip for better casting control.
Remember the slot limit for redfish is 18in to 27 in and one fish per person, enjoy the hunt and release carefully, these fish are much better to catch than to eat, even blackened.
