I just love October, the water cools just enough to get the fish schooling and the reds begin the fall spawning. Whether you want to target slot reds in the inter-coastal or the bull reds in the passes, its not hard to find a target.
For the slot size fish I've changed to "gulp" sinking minnows on a 1/4 oz jighead and fishing the creek mouths along the ICW. Work the jig close to the bottom and jig it slowly all the way to the boat. A variation is rigging a popping cork with a short leader connected to a jighead with the gulp bait or fresh dead large shrimp. I am still using 20 lb braid for better feel of the bottom and quicker hooksets for either slot or bulls, just add a 40 lb leader for the bulls, and tie the jig with a loop knot directly to the braid.
The bulls are hitting fresh cut strips or chunks of ladyfish rigged on a 5/0 hook on 40 lb flora-carbon leader. I am anchoring just out of the channel and casting into the deeper water, let the current carry the bait out, so that means keeping the bail open and feeding the line out by hand slowly. The weight amount will vary depending on the current because you don't want it on the bottom, just down in the column moving out with the current. Remember the slot size is 18-27 inches, and try to keep the bigger bulls in the water for a picture, they will release much healthier. The fish pictured measured 38 inches, approximately 25 lbs.
