Since red snapper are out of season, but still fun to catch and release, I refer to snapper fishing this time of year as "field study". The best way to be productive when fish are in season is to try different techniques and explore new territory's during the off-season.
I took some family and friends to the "car body" area to fish some MBARA reef nearshore structure, this area contained concrete rubble and a few fish pyramids in about 48' of water, it's not a spot I hit very often but the wind was howling offshore and this was a good spot without as much wind as offshore, opportunity fishing I call it.
We anchored up current and started with some small multi-hook rigs tipped with squid and frozen ly's. This immediately produced some vermilion snapper, they were promptly filleted into strip baits and sent back down on a 4 oz jig. This produced red snapper in the 8-10 lb range as fast as we could catch bait and get it back down. These fish released easily in the shallow water and we didn't have the porpoise population eating everything. We used light spinning tackle and varied the presentation from jigs to 4/0 circle hooks on a carolina rig. The key was keeping fresh strip or chunks down, they didn't want frozen baits, but didn't care how the fresh dead was presented. This spot will be a great starting hole in a very accessible area this snapper season.
I do love homework and field study's....what a way to spend the "off-season"!!!!
