Spring is early along the Forgotten Coast....the water has warmed to 66-67, is very clear and full of fingerling baitfish. We are seeing the birds working over the pods of bait nearshore and with the water warming, the mackerel and Cobia can't be far behind.
The Cobia run will start when the water warms a few more degrees and with the clarity of the water, we should be seeing the "boys in the brown suit" shortly...if last year was an indicator of our Cobia population, then it should be another great year along the forgotten coast. We target Cobia with a mixture of live bait on circle hooks to free line and bucktail jigs tipped with "gulp" eels to cast. Our tackle are 7 ft med action rods and Shimano graphite reels packed with 40 lb braid with a 7-8 ft 60 lb floura-carbon leader. I like to find good structure and chum heavy, pull away for a few minutes to let em find the scent, then approach from up-current and drift in quietly. Try the live bait freelined into the chummed area, hook the bait on top near the dorsal fin so they will pull away and down, causing vibrations, and attracting the Cobia....
We will be fishing the Mexico Beach Ling Ding in April....book us for a trip....catch a winner....share the prizes and the fun.....
